Quick answer

UK licence holders who become resident in Spain can exchange their licence for a Spanish one without a test, but only within six months of becoming resident. Book an appointment with the DGT, pay the €28.85 fee, get a driver’s medical certificate and bring your UK licence, passport, TIE and padrón certificate. How the UK–Spain licence agreement works

Spain and the UK signed an agreement in 2023 that lets UK licence holders living in Spain swap their licence for a Spanish one without taking any tests. As a resident, you can drive on your UK licence for the first six months. After that, you need a Spanish licence. If you haven’t exchanged by then, the exchange route closes and you’d have to pass the Spanish theory and practical tests.

When do your six months start?

From the start of your legal residence in Spain. In practice that’s usually tied to when you register on the padrón or get your TIE, so book the exchange as soon as you have your residence card. Appointment waits can be several weeks in busy provinces.

What about other licences?

LicenceWhat to do as a resident
EU or EEAValid in Spain; no need to exchange, but you renew under Spanish rules when it expires
UKExchange within six months of residence, no test
USNo exchange agreement; after six months of residence you need to pass Spanish tests
Other countriesSome have exchange agreements; check the DGT list for your country

Common mistakes

Leaving it too late. Book as soon as you have your TIE; the deadline is strict.

An expired UK licence. Renew with the DVLA first.

Out-of-date medical certificate. It must still be valid on the day of your appointment.

Frequently asked questions

Can I keep my UK licence too?

No. You surrender it when you exchange; the DGT returns it to the DVLA.

What if I miss the six months?

You’d need to take the Spanish theory and practical tests, usually through a driving school.

Do I need to exchange if I’m only visiting?

No. Visitors can drive on a valid UK licence.
