The full guide
Who needs a student authorisation?
If you’re not an EU, EEA or Swiss citizen and you’ll study in Spain for more than 90 days, you need a estancia por estudios. Shorter courses can be done on a tourist stay if your nationality allows visa-free travel. EU citizens just register as EU residents.
What changed with the 2025 rules
Spain’s new immigration regulation came into force on 20 May 2025 and made student stays more practical:
| Topic | Under the 2025 rules |
|---|---|
| Length of the permit | Covers the whole course, with enrolment checked each year |
| Work | Up to 30 hours a week, as an employee or self-employed, if compatible with your studies |
| Funds | 100% of the IPREM per month, €600 a month in 2026 |
| After graduating | Routes to look for work or start a business |
Rules change, so always check the current requirements on the Ministry of Inclusion website and with your consulate before applying.
Documents checklist
| Document | Notes |
|---|---|
| Passport | Valid for the length of your stay |
| Admission letter | From an officially recognised school, with course hours and dates |
| Proof of funds | 100% of the IPREM per month, in your name or a sponsor’s |
| Health insurance | Public cover or a private policy from an insurer authorised in Spain |
| Criminal record check | Usually for adults on courses over six months; apostilled and translated |
| Medical certificate | If your consulate asks for one |
| Visa form and photo | Plus the fee, which depends on nationality |
Foreign documents usually need an apostille and sworn translation. See getting documents translated and apostilled.
After you arrive
Register on the padrón, then apply for your TIE card within one month. You’ll need the TIE to open some bank accounts, travel in and out of Spain, and work.
Bringing family
Spouses, partners and children can usually come with you on linked permits. You’ll need to show extra funds for each family member, and the relationship documents must be apostilled and translated. Ask the consulate for the current amounts.
Common mistakes
Choosing a course that doesn’t qualify. Short or part-time courses may not meet the hours requirement.
Travel insurance. It must be full health insurance, not travel cover.
Missing the TIE deadline. Book the fingerprint appointment as soon as you arrive.
